Universe

The universe is all of space and time and their contents. It comprises all of existence, any fundamental interaction, physical process and physical constant, and therefore all forms of matter and energy, and the structures they form, from sub-atomic particles to entire galactic filaments.

Galaxies

A galaxy is a system of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter bound together by gravity. The word is derived from the Greek galaxias (γαλαξίας), literally 'milky', a reference to the Milky Way galaxy that contains the Solar System.

Milky Way

The Milky Way or Milky Way Galaxy is the galaxy that includes the Solar System, with the name describing the galaxy's appearance from Earth: a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars in other arms of the galaxy, which are so far away that they cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye.

Solar System

The Solar System, named after Sōl, the Latin name for the Sun, is the planetary system of the Sun and the celestial objects that orbit it. It formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a dense region of a molecular cloud collapsed, forming the Sun and a protoplanetary disc. The Sun is a typical star that maintains a balanced equilibrium by the fusion of hydrogen into helium at its core, releasing this energy from its outer photosphere.

The largest objects that orbit the Sun are the eight planets. In order of increasing distance from the Sun, there are four terrestrial planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars — two gas giants — Jupiter and Saturn — and finally two ice giants — Uranus and Neptune. All terrestrial planets have solid surfaces. Inversely giant planets are mainly composed of fluids and as such do not have a fixed surface. Over 99.86% of the Solar System's mass is located within the Sun, and nearly 90% of the rest forms Jupiter and Saturn.

Andromeda

The Andromeda Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy and is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. It was originally named the Andromeda Nebula and is cataloged as Messier 31, M31, and NGC 224.
